Solaire, AirAsia Team Up for Sky Solaire

Solaire Resort and Casino, the Philippines’ premier integrated resort, unveils a breakthrough branding project in a partnership with AirAsia.

Solaire again raises the bar as it wraps its brightly colored livery on AirAsia’s popular Airbus A320, which is scheduled to embark on its maiden flight this July. Solaire is the first-ever consumer brand in the country to fully wrap and brand a commercial airline, with an underlying thrust of further promoting tourism in the Philippines and in greater Asia.

This dynamic collaboration between Solaire and AirAsia represents another step forward in an ongoing journey towards providing modern travel and leisure experiences for its customers, with a fresh new approach to their target market.  This partnership will facilitate more passenger and cargo traffic in both regional and domestic flights, and foster stronger trade, cultural and tourism ties within Asia.

“This milestone is a key undertaking between two passionate brands with entrepreneurial and dynamic mindsets. This unprecedented branding project in the Philippines may be taken as a "leadership statement," which attests to Solaire's strong growth momentum in the industry. Yes we are again raising the bar; this time we're taking it to the skies,” says Donato Almeda, Board Director of Solaire.

Currently, Solaire’s brand colors are donned by just one airplane, but nothing is stopping them from further rolling out this innovative wrap on additional airplanes in the future with broader partnership arrangements. The campaign will continue until 2016 and it is envisioned that this high-impact ad in the sky will generate more hype and publicity as the partnership progresses.

Jasper Evangelista, the vice president of brand and marketing of Solaire, said, “This aircraft-branding campaign is a strategic branding initiative which would allow us to literally take our brand to greater heights. We have created amazing moments for our customers since Solaire launched last year, and now we’re aiming to further connect with our local & foreign guests and travelers by reinforcing our brand presence in the country’s airports. Sky Solaire will enable us to get immediate traction on this effort and even take it to a level all its own.”

In line with Solaire’s “Create Your Moments" campaign, which highlights Solaire as the perfect place to create unforgettable memories, this fitting partnership with AirAsia, one of Asia’s leading and multi-awarded airlines in their category, harmoniously evokes the key thrusts of customer service, hospitality, and excitement for both their industries. This marketing initiative is also primed to open up new revenue streams for both the integrated resort and the airline carrier.

AirAsia Philippines Chairman Maan Hontiveros said, “AirAsia Philippines is a sociable and innovative brand. We also take pride on our collaborative nature. This new livery demonstrates our creative approach to partnerships and marketing opportunities especially with companies that support our vision to grow tourism. We are thrilled to carry Solaire’s brand in the sky and on the grounds at the airports here and abroad extending to as far as our destinations in Malaysia, China, and Korea.”

Water from Air? It's Possible with Ecoleader's AWG

With some parts of the globe experiencing water shortages, where can we get safe drinking water? Ecoleaders Inc. has a suggestion: up in the air! Thanks to its new atmospheric water generator, we can still get hydrated while we're in areas where water supply is scarce.

The atmospheric water generator is a humidity and temperature-driven machine which can be used in places at 30% or more relative humidity to produce water from air.

The AWG utilizes multiple filtration technologies which assures you of safe and clean drinking water. These are:

LF2 Carbon Filter
Lower Tank UV Lamp
Sediment Filter
Two Stages of Pre-Carbon Filter
Reverse Osmosis
Post-Mineral Filter
Post-Carbon Filter
Top Tank UV Sanitizing
Water Output UV Sanitizing
Bottom Tank UV Sterilization
Molecular Sieve Faucet Filter

You can enjoy your drinking water hot or cold. Also, you can connect the AWG to a local water source. If you don't have enough outlets to plug the AWG, you can set up a solar power option so that you can still enjoy safe water.

For as low as PHP105,900, you can enjoy up to 30 liters of pure drinking water from the air, even if you are in a polluted area.

The key purpose is to bring the “next-generation enterprise computing platform” to leading companies in the country.

Pivotal is a start-up at the intersection of big data, Platform-as-a-Service, and agile development, whose mission is to help companies transform into great software companies. Pivotal is jointly owned by EMC, VMware and GE.

The focus of the presentation was for the participants to understand the technology while the hands-on activities were to give them a first hand practical experience so that they can better appreciate the solution and effectively apply it in their respective companies.

The key areas presented and showcased are in Big & Real time data combined with agile application development. These are the very same ingredients that enablecompanies like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Visa and Verizon to be highly successfulas the strength of their business is directly linked to the software they run. The presentations and highly interactive discussions bring valuable insights to the participants on how the solutions can potentially create newvalue to their respective organizations.

Host and moderator Robin Fong, Pivotal Sales Director for Thailand and Philippines noted that the success of the class was due mainly to the participants’passion and hunger to learn new leading edge technology. The enthusiasm, energy level and teamwork werehighly visible throughout the session. He added that there is a great potential and future ahead for the Philippines to adopt leading edge technologies like Pivotal due to the availability in the country of qualified resources in the areas of application development and information technology.

Agot Isidro Makes Theater Return with Red Turnip's Rabbit Hole

Singer and actress Agot Isidro returns to the stage with the Philippine adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Rabbit Hole" produced by Red Turnip Theater.

Isidro, who last had a theatrical appearance in 2007 with Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah, will give life to the lead role of Becca, a mother grappling with the loss of her son.

"I'm a little nervous about going back to the theater because it has been seven years since my last production," Isidro said on her comeback.

However, the current "Kambal Sirena" star added, "I am excited at the same time because I know it will be a welcome and enriching break after years of TV work."

Asked about giving straight plays, which Red Turnip usually presents a try, the musical veteran said, "It's a challenge for me. A straight play is all new to me, but I am looking forward to the process."

Joining Isidro are theater veteran Michael Williams as her husband Howie, Che Cosio as Izzy, Ross Pesigan as Jason, and Sheila Francisco as Nat.

Topper Fabregas, one of the guys behind Red Turnip, makes his directorial debut.

Fabregas, known for his role in "Cock", was once reluctant on doing the directorial job for "Rabbit Hole". "I did not intend to be the director," he said.

He accepted the job after getting convinced by his fellow co-founders. "This is my personal favorite play, so they entrusted me on doing this job," he added.

Francisco instantly accepted the role of Nat, Becca's mother, after Fabregas reached to her. "Topper convinced me to play in Rabbit Hole because we are already close to each other. I met him when he was young. I watched him grow into a good theater actor, so I did not hesitate on taking the role when he told me he will direct the play," said Francisco.

"Rabbit Hole" opens on August 1 and runs all weekends of August at the Whitespace along Chino Roces Avenue in Makati City. Tickets are available through Ticketworld and at Red Turnip Theater. This play is co-presented by Fila.

Metrobank Launches Dramatic Reading Series with G. Töngi

Media celebrity G Töngi, newly appointed Artistic Director of Upstart Productions, spearheads Upstart Soundstage, a series of bi-weekly dramatic readings presented by Metrobank Card Corporation at Century City Mall at 7:00 pm on Sunday, June 15, 2014. Upstart Soundstage will present a different full-length drama, comedy, or musical every two weeks, each show featuring well-known theater personalities and stage directors. No props, no sets, no costumes—just pure performance.

“Readings like this are very popular in L.A and New York,” declares Töngi, who has timed her birthday celebration to coincide with the first play in the series. “We want to do the same thing over here.” To that end, Upstart has lined up an impressive array of actors for the project: noted stage and screen personalities Audie Gemora, Noel Trinidad (one of Upstart’s board members), and Töngi herself, along with renowned directors like Anton Juan and Bobby Garcia.

But will Manila audiences take to the concept of stage shows without any staging? Apparently, they already have: Töngi and her partners have conducted quite a few informal readings of this type, and they’ve all been very well-received. Upstart founder Joel Trinidad, Noel’s son, is not at all surprised. “I’ve always loved dramatic readings, “ he shares. “When you take away the sounds and lights and costumes, you force people to really pay attention.” Upstart Managing Director Onyl Torres, who doubles as the company’s Musical Director and Composer, likens the medium to a radio play. “You get the same emotions, the same human drama,” he says. “It’s very powerful.” Töngi concurs: “In our last few readings, people were in tears—the actors and the audience.”

Upstart Soundstage kicks off with Töngi’s birthday celebration: a reading of Jane Anderson’s The Baby Dance, an emotionally charged drama about a suburban couple adopting the unborn baby of a poor couple. Other proposed shows in the series—which will run conti-nuously, every two weeks, in three-month blocks—include Pippin by Stephen Schwartz, Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet, The Sea-gull by Anton Chekov, Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Christopher Hampton, and many others. “A different show every two weeks, at a fraction of the cost of a regular show,” notes Töngi. “Where else can you experience that?”

Upstart Soundstage: The Dramatic Readings. Starting Sunday, June 15, at 7:00 pm at the Event Space, 5th floor of Century City Mall, Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City, and playing continuously every other Sunday from then on. Show schedule may change based on availability of performance rights and other factors. Tickets at P300 each, available at the door. Presented by Metrobank Card Corporation in cooperation with Century City Mall. From Upstart Productions.

A Jeepney Joyride to Intramuros

We had a different travel experience to Intramuros thanks to Jeepney Tours. Good friend Ross Del Rosario of Wazzup Pilipinas invited me and some more bloggers to join this tour to the Walled City.

The air-conditioned jeepney arrived at the Hotel Intercontinental in Makati. Unlike the typical jeepney in which there are two long benches at each side, the interior of the jeepney of Jeepney Tours more looks like a bus, so I found more comfort in sitting than at the usual jeepney, especially when it's almost full.
img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Lo02EMhNaEZ_9x5UDqjx0SwwvM4_WaFSMhA7eKV0G0P12BYhZmI3o4f8Oz3O1yEzN5Bqzs7brEuAJPNdCkTnYfV1i11lLGceDgNjLB6NVvemZmg_6TjvLFYegd0pPPnjoKJMw3bl9es/s1600/Jeepney+tours+seats.JPG" height="265" width="400" />
And what's so special is that it has a videoke set powered by Wow! Magic Sing, so while we were on the road to Intramuros, we tried if we can still belt it out.

I drew first blood in the singoffs by doing a sort of a post-hardcore version of Michelle Branch's "Breathe", which has become one of my favorite songs since I first heard of the song during my freshman days.
Me (L): "If I just BRREEATHE..." Oh wait!

I got addicted to videoke too much (for a night only), that I even did photobombs while singing.

Eventually, we made it to Intramuros, and guess who was there. Carlos Celdran!

Unfortunately, we took a different route than Carlos' group and had dinner at Barbara's, where aside from the buffet, a Filipiniana dance exhibition also took place.
We ended the night with another videoke session plus booze back to Makati. It was a wild videoke night inside the aircon jeepney. If you want to experience the fun, just log on to JeepneyTours.com.

Las Flores: A First Taste of Authentic Spanish Dishes

Although I've already tried some Spanish or Spanish-inspired food like paella, I never went to a Spanish restaurant. Not until a good friend of mine invited me to Las Flores in Taguig. Located at the Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City's central business district, Las Flores is a place usually visited by many because it's at least one of only a few Spanish restaurants in that area.

There, I found out that there's more to the Spanish dishes. When I tasted the restaurant's paella, I found out that it's totally different from the paella I grew up with. It turns out, the genuine Spanish paella tastes very delicious.

Also, being a sandwich lover, I like to try new sandwiches, from new burgers to simply some experiments of my own at home. When Uri Singla, the marketing head of the resto, introduced me and my friends to the beef angus and foie minis sandwich, I did not hesitate on tasting it immediately.
I (standing, right) and my pals together with Las Flores marketing head Uri
Sangla (standing, 2nd from left)
It's really delicious. But on an intriguing note, I found out that the "bun" is actually made of goose liver. I'm not a fan of edible liver, but I never tasted even a hint that it's goose liver after tasting the beef sandwich.

Another surprising fact I learned from the resto was that there's such a thing as edible humus. After tasting "Secreto Iberico", a pork dish with humus, I find it delicious too.

Another thing I found out from Las Flores was that you can tweak your custard. A dessert served to us was "Flan de Arandanos con Nata". To make it simple, it's a custard topped with blueberry.

If you want to try these dishes and the rest of Las Flores' menu, come to the restaurant located at 25th St. Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, at the back of One McKinley Place. For reservations, call (02)5522815 or 09166193365. Visit its Facebook page for more of the resto.

Acupuncture is Not Just Sticking Needles In by Kathy Kenny Ngo

Acupuncture has long been associated with pins and needles which is why a lot of people balk at the thought of trying it. Many Filipinos are scared of the needle and having a few being poked at you to treat a sickness is not their idea of fun. Truth be told, most would choose to suffer through their illness than have some needles be stuck on them. Thankfully, Dr. Philip Niño Tan-Gatue, an acupuncturist, is more than willing to shed light as to why acupuncture is nothing to be afraid of.

1. What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture, in the narrow sense, refers to the insertion and manipulation of needles into the body, usually at set locations known popularly as “points”. In the broad sense, it refers to a collection of procedures related to needling. The word itself comes from the latin acus meaning “needle” and pungere meaning “to puncture” and it involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles. These needles are then manipulated by hand or by electrical stimulation. Needles can be placed on sites of local pain or on pre-defined acupuncture points that lie on pathways of Qi known as “meridians” or “channels”.

2.  What are its benefits?

The most important benefit that acupuncture offers comes from the fact that it does not involve administering or taking any medication. There are patients who, for various reasons, are unable or unwilling to take or to increase medication dose or number. These include patients on kidney or liver failure, or simply patients who want to take less medication--pharmaceutical or herbal--to keep from "overloading" their systems. As for conditions it can treat, acufinder.com lists the following:

Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat Disorders

Sinusitis
Sore Throat
Hay Fever
Earache
Nerve Deafness
Ringing in the Ears
Dizziness
Poor Eyesight

Circulatory Disorders

High Blood Pressure
Angina Pectoris
Arteriosclerosis
Anemia

Gastrointestinal Disorders

Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Spastic colon
Colitis
Constipation
Diarrhea
Food Allergies
Ulcers
Gastritis
Abdominal Bloating
Hemorrhoids

Gynecological / Genitourinary Disorders

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Irregular, Heavy or Painful Menstruation
Endometriosis
Menopause
Fibroids
Chronic Bladder Infection
Complications in Pregnancy
Morning Sickness
Kidney Stones
Impotence
Infertility in Men and Women
Sexual Dysfunction

Respiratory Disorders

Asthma
Emphysema
Bronchitis
Colds and Flus

Immune Disorders

Candida
Chronic Fatigue
HIV and AIDS
Epstein Barr Virus
Allergies
Lupus
MS
Hepatitis

Addiction

Smoking Cessation
Drugs
Alcohol

Emotional and Psychological Disorders

Anxiety
Insomnia
Depression
Stress

Musculoskeletal and Neurological Disorders

Arthritis
Neuralgia
Sciatica
Back Pain
Bursitis
Tendonitis
Stiff Neck
Bell’s Palsy
Trigeminal Neuralgia
Headaches and Migraines
Stroke
Cerebral Palsy
Polio
Sprains
Muscle Spasms
Shingles

Acupuncture Also Treats

Chemotherapy/Radiation Side Effects
Diabetes
Dermatological Disorders
Weight Control

3. What are its limitations?

In my opinion, its limitations come from the fact that it is practitioner dependent--acupuncture is not just sticking needles in. It involves diagnosis, points selection, needle insertion and manipulation. A certain mastery of skill is required.

Another such limitation is that it is difficult to use acupuncture for treating diseases with an obvious anatomic cause. Treating muscle pain because of spasm is one thing, but treating an injury like a torn tendon may require surgery.

It is also good for initial stages of infections, but it's only secondary for later, more severe infections.

4. What are the restrictions once you start undergoing acupuncture?

Generally, acupuncture is discouraged for people who are hungry or who have just had a heavy meal. Hemophiliacs are also discouraged from undergoing acupuncture. Also, it is recommended that patients avoid exposure to cold right after acupuncture (maybe 2-3 hours) because this might lead to cramps and spasms.
Patients on blood thinners are NOT forbidden from undergoing acupuncture.

5. It's summertime. What are the common ailments that can be easily cured by acupuncture?

Interestingly, summertime in the Philippines means more people turning on air-conditioners and electric fans. This leads to more exposure to cold and thus, more aches and pains. Also, summer weather leads to respiratory problems such as allergic rhinitis. I won't say acupuncture will cure allergic rhinitis, but it will sure help in reducing it!

6. How can people who are scared of needles undergo acupuncture?

That's just a matter of proper communication with the patient--helping them understand what they will experience and instilling confidence in the practitioner.

Doc Phil, as he is fondly called, actually held a session with me where he poked me on the arm and true to what he said, if the practitioner knew what he was doing, you would hardly feel the actual poke. When the needle is in though, it will give you this unusual feeling where you can feel the needle being moved inside your muscles but it wouldn’t hurt. It felt like a heaviness or a vibe and it wasn’t painful at all. Now this is the kind of acupuncture that I can definitely do and live with. The above FAQ is taken from Doc Philip’s blog at http://acupuncture.net.ph
